Peace On Earth

President Obama – Nobel Peace Laureate

US President Obama in his acceptance speech of the Nobel Peace Prize defended his decision to send 30,000 more US troops to Afghanistan, to continue to fight a war that was started by President George Bush and has lasted for over eight years.  Obama indicated that some wars are necessary and just, and reminded the world of the burden the United States had borne in the fight against oppression and appeal for greater international efforts for peace.

Like other peace loving citizens, I am happy that Mr. Obama was awarded the Nobel peace prize but defer with him on his stance on a war in a foreign land that has lasted for over eight years with numerous civilian casualty. The US military, industrial complex must seek alternative means of fostering peace amongst nations.

Human beings can eradicate violent conflicts if they stop being overly exploitative of each other and if our states men and women are honest and sincere in working towards a just and peace loving planet.  War has never and will never bring about Peace. Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, and other unsung peace heroes are right.

President Obama has asserted that, “The United States of America has helped underwrite global security for more than six decades with the blood of citizens and the strength of arms.”  He fails to point out the national interest of the USA in its adventures.  All peace loving people should demand that we lead the way to making the world more peaceful

Mr. Obama was applauded when he renewed his pledge to ban torture and close the prison at the American base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. “Let us reach for the world that ought to be,” he said, “that spark of the divine that still stirs within each of our souls.” The poor, tinny nations of the world will have no incentive to seek weapons of mass destruction if they know that the mighty military nations will not go around whipping them for no just cause.

Each of us has a role to play.  Merry Christmas and a very happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year to you.

Dedicated to Pa Nkemnji Achenjang (1919-2005)
